An Introduction to Water Polo
Water polo is a competitive team sport played in the water between two teams. There are seven players in the water from each team at one time.
Players can be substituted in and out of the game at any time. The player coming in to the game can only enter the match at the following times:
- during the intervals between periods of play
- after a goal has been scored
- during a timeout
Games consist of 4 quarters and typically last 45 minutes to 1 hour.
The ball can only be handled by one hand at a time in water polo – with the exception of the goalkeeper, who can use both hands.
Players have to have a greater lung capacity and good swimming skills.
